Shared System I: Depths & ⥙ From Below

Shared System I: Depths & ⥙ From Below is an immersive light and sound installation and performative system created by Emery C. Martin and Kerstin L. Hovland to create two distinct sonic and visual experiences. This iteration of Shared System features a forest of light and two soundscapes, each created by one of the artists. Using each other’s soundscape as inspiration and foundation, each artist programs the environment to respond to their interpretation of the audio.

Depths - Soundscape by Kerstin L. Hovland, Programming by Emery C. Martin
Depths, is a sonic landscape created from found sounds originating from domains alien to our terrestrial existence. Recordings were sourced from unexplained sounds from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s network of deep-sea hydrophones and NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope, Juno Spacecraft, and Cassini Space Probe. The artist processed each recording to tease out the underlying harmonics and rhythms present in each sound source and wove them together into a meditation on the absolute darkness in the depths of space, the depths of the ocean, and the depth of knowledge we’ve yet to attain.

⥙ From Below, is a series of single-take sonic improvisations evoking a tense and off balance internal psychological point of view situated in an environment of possibly ominous hostile externalities in a future present. It oscillates and shifts around the question of whether or not calamity comes from above, from below, or rather is simply interlinked within a feedback loop of inseparable causality.
